If you frequent or grew up in the Red Lion area as I did you’ll likely know where the Red Lion Corner Cafe is. Where Cape Horn Family and several other restaurants have sat over the years is a new family run restaurant. This one is cool though, with some tastier food options than your standard “family” or “diner” spot. Sure they’ve got your classics but these guys know what they’re doing. For a Monday morning when I rolled in I was surprised at how many people were there with more showing up as I made my way out.
They’ve had time to work out the kinks every business experiences in its infancy. Having opened in August of 2018, now is when we start to find out if they’re that good. Taking a look at what sets them apart we see serious care put into customer service. Waiting for a top off on your coffee doesn’t exist and the layout makes flagging down your waitress a breeze. My server was super friendly (as was the woman I sat down with at first) and the portions were huge. I like to consider myself a frequent member of the clean plate club but today it wasn’t happening. Some people may not like a large portion but honestly, they’re wrong. A large portion at prices that beat your generic breakfast spots means a better deal in our eyes.
I decided to have some breakfast and blow off my next appointment (sorry for that) because I could tell by all the dishes I saw it was going to smack. I opted for one of their specials, the cowboy omelet which was as good as it sounded. Sausage, onion, peppers, and mozzarella cheese, sign me up. SO nice to see people using mozz instead of that orange plastic cheese that never hits like it’s supposed to. You know how sometimes you get homefries and they’re either raw or burnt to a crisp and impossible to chew? This wasn’t that. Homefries, perfect. Toast, perfect. If you’re into local family run businesses like we are with friendly staff, great prices, and exceptional service, go get a bite to eat, take the kids out.
They post their specials daily on their Facebook page: RLCornerCafe
Collage is such a unique little shop that I really don’t know how to start this. I say that every time BUT it’s not like they sell one type of thing or one style of thing. Think about when you go to central market and see all the different varieties and flavors of local food. Collage is that but with products and gifts. Let me explain with some pictures…
What you’re seeing here is the huge variety of high end products they offer (at realistic prices too). From Vera Bradley backpacks, artisan soaps, jewelry, even some clothes they definitely have something in stock that will catch your eye. I always talk about the owners because what I can express of their personality will help you understand why I chose to write the article about this business. Whitney was such a pleasure to talk to, one of the most giving people I’ve met with to date. She loves the community and although I say that it’s hard to comprehend without seeing all that she does for yourself. Collage won “The Award for Socially Responsible Retailer” in NYC at the Retailer Excellence Awards, for her work with Access York and throughout the community.
Throwing it back, a little history lesson in Collage and Whitney’s history in the retail space. Her family going back a few generations owned several independent retail locations. In York in the 80s/90s there was a popular store called Mailman’s that partnered with The Bon-Ton. After college she worked at Savemart with her dad and took a sales job when that closed about 15 years ago. 9 years ago she met Janice the former owner of Collage and jumped in when she retired.
Whitney’s goal with Collage was to create a place with unique products, a welcoming environment, and a community of patrons that could give back within the community. Her products support local artists and small businesses across the country. They carry lines that most companies don’t but remain affordable and accommodating for all. I could write an entire article about their shop dog Jude but the news covered enough on Jude (who is a fantastic dog). Wrap up time. Hand picked high-end manufactured and home made products, one of the most giving owners we’ve met. Works with the Access York women’s shelter and collects donations for them year round. They also sponsor the mini maker’s markets in York. All you need to know is that Collage is the spot to be.
Last July we met with Kathryn from Olp’s flowers in Jacobus. When we met her she had recently taken over the business and was starting to make some changes. We didn’t add any pictures to the article because we could tell that what she envisioned for her storefront was far from what she was working with. Like the work she puts in on the dozens of beautiful flowers and arrangements we checked out she has blown us away with the transformation of her store. We didn’t take any before pictures last year but here’s a few of what Olp’s Flowers looks like now.
Walking through the front door it’s doesn’t even feel like the same place anymore. The upstairs is now used for wedding and event consultations as well as the main office. Out behind the shop you’ll now find a completely refinished area where the “Wine Down Wednesday” events are held. These events take place Wednesdays at 6pm and more details including tickets can be purchased from olpsflowers.com/workshops. To give you a little taste of what kinds of things one would learn from these classes a few upcoming from the release of this article are: self watering planters, air plant containers, and macrame plant hangers. Oh and you can drink while you’re there hence “Wine” Down Wednesday.
Run it back to where I said air plant containers… There’s also a new make your own air plant wall that houses all of the goodies doodads and air plants that are used in the air plant class. I’m going to say air plant a lot, I’m sorry but they’re super cool and Kathryn showed me a few that are massive. Air plants might have to become my new hobby just saying. On top of air plants (last time I swear) they’ve also got some super cool orchids encased in resin, macrame, and a lot of bamboo. The orchids are one of the slickest new products of theirs considering they can be made into corsages, boutonnieres, and even used in arrangements
So to wrap this up, what’s changed at Olp’s Flowers in Jacobus? The entire store has been renovated, their plants are not only alive now but they’re high quality. I wouldn’t describe the shop as your average flower shop, it’s got an artistic and earthy feel that gives off great vibes. Their wedding arrangements and centerpieces are out of this world and accomplish their goal of being different. When I first talked to Kathryn she wanted to change what people thought of when they think flowers or floral arrangements. She wants people to see the art and talent it takes to put together these extraordinary pieces and I think she crushes it. Flowers, plants, weddings, events, and a reason to drink a bottle of wine on a Wednesday… Olp’s Flowers is the place.
This interview was way different than any other interview we’ve ever had. We met with David from Power Train West York, and damn were we blown away. Their gym is unlike any other gym I’ve personally ever been to. They’ve got 20 locations (yes it’s a franchise) and started out about 15 years ago in Lancaster, PA. They work with anyone from pro athletes and youth athletes, to grandmas and grandpas. There's a place and program for everyone.
Their business model isn’t your typical “free pizza on tuesday” come and use our machines type of gym. Whenever you’re at one of their facilities you’re working with one of their coaches. Now I’ve never had a personal trainer before and have had countless gym memberships that I rarely used. The quality of the workout was 10x better than I’ve ever had before. We had a brief discussion about goals and then got to work. This showed me in the first 5 minutes that they actually care about your success in their facilities.
Their plans are extremely affordable (way cheaper than a personal trainer at most franchise gyms) and there are plenty of options for your workouts. There are basically 3 categories for their workouts: personal training, speed and agility, and boot camp. Personal training is your one on one training sessions while speed and agility is geared towards athlete’s and their performance. Boot camps are their group classes that are fast paced and packed with workouts, quite a bit different than your machine swapping classes at the majority of gyms. I know that I’ll be getting a membership here. If you’re not sold give your local Power Train a call and get a free workout. Oh and here’s there website too: http://www.powertrainsports.com/
After a brief conversation with Jeff from Unlimited Towing, it was very clear that he enjoys what he does. It’s always refreshing to see thriving small businesses with owners that actually work and enjoy what they do. Jeff’s been towing for as long as he can remember, since his father started towing in the 70’s he was born into it. Jeff’s been in business as Unlimited Towing since 2010 now and is still family owned and operated.
Whenever you need a tow in York, Harrisburg, Lancaster, and beyond Jeff will be available anywhere you need help, 24/7. Although they’ll go a long range although they operate in the East York/Red Lion/Dallastown area of York county. Doesn’t matter if you need a jump start, tow, tire change, winched out of a ditch, or you’ve locked yourself out… Unlimited towing is a call away, and we respect their ability to keep up with demand with such a small crew.
Since they’re family run you can believe their prices are a little lower than the majority of competitors in the area AND you’ll receive better service. Not too often do you get served by the owner of the business. We’ve found that people who actually work in their business deliver far superior care when handling their products or rendering their services. Save their number in your phone, you’ll be glad you have it next time you need some help. View their site here: http://www.unlimitedtowingyork.com/
This past week we had the pleasure of talking with Jordan, let me just say that this man is a rare breed. Taking the time to meet with you himself for estimates, and even rendering his services on your home himself. We’re quickly realizing that most of the people we interview don’t think to dedicate that much care towards their customers. Believe it or not we interview a LOT of people and only a handful ever make it to the site.
Harrisburg, Lancaster, York, Mechanicsburg, Camp Hill, Palmyra… Really anywhere around (up to) an hour away from Palmyra and Jordan will come out for an estimate. From sidewalks, roofs, decks, patios, and anything else on the exterior of your home our man Jordan will be out to help. Hey even if your office building or sidewalks are looking a little mundane these days he can bring that clean shine back. I just saw one of the pictures on his FB and I swear this old moldy looking roof looks brand new now (posted below). Quite frankly, I didn’t know results like that were even possible.
So what’s our take on Remoh Services Pressure Washing? We dig it, big time. Residential, commercial, Jordan’s your guy. There’s even a discount when you have your entire house cleaned. So why has Jordan’s business been around for 5 years? Because he does killer work, at better prices, and stands 100% behind his work. You don’t find that anymore so enjoy it and support an outstanding local business.
Not like ours, this one is a specialty contractor. We had a nice chat with Jack from Tri - State Concrete Services Inc. They’re not your typical concrete contractor (hence the specialty) these guys specialize in mudjacking, also known as slab jacking. Jack’s been mudjacking for over 35 years now, and has been operating Tri - State Concrete Services Inc. with his family since 2004. So say your concrete patio sank on one side and is uneven, or maybe your driveway, sidewalks, etc. These guys come in and level it out. It’s actually pretty cool, they drill through the existing concrete and pump in soil cement to raise the whole slab back to level.
Mudjacking is way more cost effective when you compare it to replacing any slab of concrete. Plus if aesthetics are important to you, replacing the existing slab will likely leave an oddball slab of concrete that doesn’t match the rest. You can find these guys top ranked on home advisor, but they’ve been around longer than that.
These guys do lots of residential work, but they do commercial work too. Any concrete you need leveled, they’re your people. Doesn’t matter if it’s made with real stone (which they do themselves), flagstone, or any other masonry stone. They’ve got contracts with some of the biggest property management companies and municipalities in the area because their work is so good. If local municipals trust them, so do we. To learn more about Tri - State Concrete Services Inc. check them out at the link below.
As a car enthusiast it’s always fun to visit and see automotive shops, detailing ones especially. Walking into Classic Shine it’s clear that they take a lot of pride in their work. The shop is beautiful and filled with several very nice classics as well as modern cars. Their list of services is pretty long for a detailer, but makes sense for them to offer. Services include:
Paint Protection Films,
and Car Storage.
Additionally they offer some mechanical services, for instance when I was there they were working on 2 different vehicles. One was a truck being vinyl wrapped and the other was a Chevelle that was having a few upgrades done. So by mechanical services, we don’t mean oil changes. In all their services they show their care and attention to detail in putting out some very high quality products.
Pardon this awful pun, Classic Shine definitely outshines their local competitors. This is true in both their customer service and the actual shine of a detailed car. The level of their products is even superior as they’re the only local detailer that offers Modesta ceramic coatings. Between going out of their way to please you as a customer, and their honest pricing it’s hard to justify getting a detail anywhere else. Classics, antiques, collectibles, luxury, and even race cars, no matter what you bring to Classic Shine you’ll be leaving with a smile.
Don’t want to believe us? Here’s a couple of their Facebook reviews:
Dustin says:”Couldn't ask for a better team to work on my vehicles. I would recommend these guys to anyone because there work is amazing. Especially when they can take a very dirty wrangler and make it look brand new inside. Thanks for the great work.”
Or what about Phil, “These guys did a spectacular job and we're extremely detail-oriented. Great all-around mix of quality and value..”
Their site is still in progress but for now check them out and give them a like on FB: https://www.facebook.com/classicshinellc/
Construction… A difficult industry to survive in, especially in York County with the saturation of the market. Today we have something pretty special. A business that’s been around for almost 20 years, family owned, and doesn’t sub-contract! We always try to find quality companies to work with and these guys really stand out. As a family owned company ourselves it’s always nice to see a family involved together in business.
It’s refreshing to say the least, seeing someone who still takes pride in their work. Par One Construction is no exception. Par One is a general contractor specializing in exterior construction (windows, doors, decks, roofs, anything on the outside of the house) that leaves their mark in the community. Thier specialize in exterior doesn’t mean they don’t put out incredible interior work. These guys offer top tier work and all maintain the highest levels of certification available. This added accountability allows them to offer better warranties than almost all their competitors. Add up to 100% financing into that mix and you’re crazy to use anyone else.
They’ve recently changed their motto/philosophy from “excellence the first time” to “we build relationships”. Their work is grade A++, and it’s easy to appreciate the level of skill and care they put into their work. They’re doing much more than providing excellent work at fair prices, they take the time and put forth the extra effort that shows they care about your projects. They appreciate you as a client and make sure you’re taken care of the right way. Speaking from experience there’s nothing worse than paying for someone to fix or renovate your home and paying someone else to come and fix it for you. I’m confident after seeing their work that using Par One will never leave you stuck in that situation. If high profile businesses like Primanti Brothers and Wyndridge Farms trusts them, we do too. Head to their site for a large gallery and more information: https://www.paroneconstruction.com/
Lucy Dowd is one of few professionals who deeply cares about each of her clients and their families. She makes the unfortunate necessity of end of life legal services as simple as possible. Lucy can handle your wills, power of attorney, and living wills. This is something that few of us think of on a regular basis. Nobody wants to think about what happens when they’re no longer with us.
When it comes to end of life legal services it’s extremely easy to get confused on what you might need, want, already have, etc. When discussing everything she handles for her clients I was a little surprised at how much is really involved in a loved one’s passing. For wills and estates Lucy deals with the executor of the will to I want to add in that everyone needs to have a will, because if not then your family is in for a headache. There are two ways an estate can be settled without a will is either court or an out of court settlement, either way you’re going to need some Tylenol to get through it all.
I still don’t know as much as I’d like to (or should) about the entire process. Fortunately I’ve got an appointment with Lucy to discuss my will and estate planning so my family isn't burdened with figuring out what to do when I’ve moved on. I would suggest everyone get in touch with her through her website: www.lucydowdlaw.com/ for as much information as you need or to schedule a meeting with her.
